Who is Murray The
Cat?
Murray is a lot of things to a lot
of people. To some, Murray is the epitome of wisdom. To others, he
represents the depth of soul found in those who accept the world
and live their lives in it without questions, a master of
Zen. To still others, he is the
quintessential lazy cat, whose existence is made complete by two
meals a day and a good rub on the belly.
Murray is all this, and more.
Actually, Murray was all
this and more.
Murray The Cat was the companion of
author Tim Wood for nearly 13 years. Sadly, he departed this realm
in May 2001 after falling victim to a debilitating intestinal
disease.
Murray was a good friend, a
stalwart companion and a voracious eater, for much of his life a
rotund furball who liked nothing better than to crawl up on Tim’s
lap and have his belly rubbed. The subject of several newspaper
columns, which will be included in Tim’s upcoming collection
UNBLOCKED: 20 YEARS OF WRITERS BLOCK, Murray was also profiled in
a little-seen film, "The Murray Zone."
As an outdoor cat, Murray was
subject to the occasional minor injury or illness. In the late
1990s, however, he began to have intestinal problems. When cancer
was suspected, he underwent exploratory surgery. While he was
cancer-free, the surgery confirmed that he did have inflammatory
bowel disease, which proved just as
difficult to treat. Regimes of
Prednisone and even homeopathic treatment helped Murray live with
the condition, but he never fully recovered.
Now Murray is enshrined as the
mascot of Murray The Cat Productions, which seeks to follow his
philosophy of life: eat well, sleep often, and get a belly rub
every chance you get.
